Improve STD 8 results, head teachers told

Salima principal education adviser Eliam Banda has advised primary school head teachers in the district to work hard to improve Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations results.

Speaking during a Malawi Primary School Head Teachers Association-Salima Chapter’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday in the district, he emphasised that schools achieve good results due to sound leadership.

“We have observed that many teachers report late for classes and we need to encourage each other so that learners and our schools perform better,” said Banda.

Salima Head Teachers Association president Jacob Mwasiya bemoaned shortage of teachers, saying it was partly responsible for the district’s poor PSLCE results.

“We are putting in place strategies to work as a team to address high pupil-teacher ratios. We are learning from other districts which also have high enrolment,” he said.

Former head teacher Jonathan Mumba shared with his colleagues best practices to ensure that their schools perform well in national examinations.

“Head teachers should seriously work on administrative issues, putting the house in order and ensuring that every teacher is adhering to ethics,” he said.

James Kalonga, a resident at Salima Boma, supported the head teachers’ move to find ways to address high pupil-teacher ratio in their schools.

“We know that in some schools, one teacher handles a class of about 100 learners, which is more than the recommended ratio of one teacher to 60 learners,” he said
